As China’s population and people’s living standard continue growing, there will be an increasing demand for aquatic products. Under the circumstance that the marine fishing yield is not increasing by much or even shrinking, supply of aquatic products will rely mainly on development of aquaculture industry. Organized by the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, as the main unit of industrialization, Chonghe Heavy Industry invested in building of China’s first deep and open sea aquaculture platform. The platform was converted from a 100, 000 DWT Fulla Type Oil Tanker. With a molded length of 243.8 meters, a beam breadth of 42 meters, a molded depth of 21.4 meters, a draft of 14.8 meters and a speed of 15 knots,

it can provide up to eighty thousand cubic meters of aquiculture water. The platform uses the quality, warm middle and lower layer seawater resources in the deep waters to build a comprehensive fishery production system that combines industrialized aquaculture, aquatic product logistics and processing as well as offshore production management and control systems together with the purpose of achieving basic functions such as large scale propagation, cultivation, processing and offshore storage and transport of aquatic products. Plus, the platform can also serve as a mobile base station to provide comprehensive services including material supply and catch processing for open sea fishing boats. Its function can even be further expanded to other aspects including marine research, tourism and rescue, which are of strategic significance in terms of garrisoning the territorial waters, fishery resources and frontiers of China.
